1. a writ of summons on the charge of resorting to a foreign court or authority, such as that of the pope, and so disregarding the supremacy of the sovereign.
2. this offense.
3. the penalty, as of forfeiture, imprisonment, or outlawry, incurred for it.
[short for praemunire facias (words occurring in the writ), (literally) that thou do warn; praemunire warn < Medieval Latin confusion of Latin praemunīre to fortify, and praemonēre to warn]
